Questions

What is a business entity search?
A search of the records a state keeps on the businesses registered with it: corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships and similar entities. Each record shows the entity's legal name, ID number, status, formation date and registered agent. In most states the secretary of state keeps these records.
Is Open State Index a government website?
No. It is an independent website, not affiliated with any state or federal agency. It searches official state records where the state allows it, and links to the official state search everywhere else. For any official purpose, confirm a record with the state.
Is the business lookup free?
Yes. Searching here costs nothing and needs no account. Some states charge for certificates of good standing or certified copies; those are ordered from the state itself.
Why do some states show results here and others do not?
Some states publish their business records openly or allow other sites to search them. Others only answer searches made on their own website, so for those states this site sends you straight to the official search instead.
Can I find a company's EIN or owners here?
No. State business records do not include federal EINs, and many states do not list owners. Our EIN lookup guide explains the legitimate ways to find an EIN.
